Mary Ellah guilty of the murder of her husband, Thomas (Petit Treason), in the parish of South Cave on 1st February 1757 by striking him with an axe and giving him a mortal wound on the right temple.  The punishment for a woman found guilty of Treason (whether High or Petit) was to be burned instead of hanged.   By the eighteenth century they were usually strangled beforehand.  Strangled and burned.
